UPLAND GAME DOGS

The Pointer is different than the water in many ways. It is originally bred to point and retrieve the birds, so the handler can walk up and flush the bird to shoot. Then, the handler can send the dog to retrieve the bird and bring it to hand. The Pointer allows the Hunter more time to get to the bird and get a better shot. Therefore, you have less crippled or runaway birds.

Most Upland Game dogs will follow this same type of natural skill set or they can be taught to hone those skills to even higher levels. While the pointer is the most popular there are other breeds such as the Setters and Brittanies.

Program Information

Each dog starts out with a four month program to start learning the skills. Each dog can start as early as 6 months up until they are two. They will stay with Jim or one of his grandkids at all times. They are surrounded by other dogs of the same energy levels and more experienced hunting dogs. They will be treated like family and taken care of like one of their own. It is also okay to come and pick your dog up for a weekend or two. Most dogs will come back from a visit with their own family happy to be here.

While training you are encouraged to come out and spend numerous sessions learning the same techniques so you can handle your dog in the field just the same. This also helps to show you how they are progressing and watching them learn through the different levels.
