We encourage Owner involvement and welcome your presence during training sessions. Owners may visit our facilities and may choose to bring their dog home for a visit during their training sessions.

Through Jim Rice’s unique 4-step program your dog will progress along a path towards becoming a broke dog and true hunting companion; they will be able to remain steady to wing and shot. You dog can then be hunted on wild birds, started in competition, or at your favorite hunt club.

The Making of a Hunting Companion

4 Month Course

$900/month

Grammar School

A solid foundation of Basic Obedience, Handling, and an introduction to birds will start your dog off right. The dog is taken through the basic handling, verbal and whistle commands, then introduced to gun fire but remains on a check cord. The goal of this step is to bring out the dog’s natural instincts, style, and intensity. Pigeons are used to begin training, but the dog will later hunt quail or chukar. Pheasants are available on premises and can be used by request.

Junior High

Dogs are taught the basics of quartering, pointing, and focusing on birds. They will also learn the “whoa” command, as well as whistle commands. There will also be use of a Garmin Tri-Tronics Training Collar.

High School

During this step the dogs will refine what they have learned in Junior High. The dog is running on their own with whistle, voice, and electronic collar commands from handler. The dog will start to find, point, and hold point until the bird is flushed.

College Degree

The dog will refine its skills in finding, pointing, and holding point until the bird is flushed. Then, the final goal is to have them steady to wing and shot.
